Fake Budget 2024 infographics used in new Telegram phishing scam

A new phishing scheme has appeared on the messaging platform Telegram, utilizing phony Budget 2024 infographics, according to a Singapore Police Force (SPF) announcement dated April 23.

What is the scam?

In this scam iteration, victims would get a Telegram message with a Budget 2024 "infographic" purportedly from the Ministry of Finance (MOF).

The message would persuade victims to visit a phishing link to "verify" their eligibility for government assistance.

Victims who clicked on the link were taken to a bogus website where they were asked to enter their names and the contact numbers associated with their Telegram accounts.

Those who obeyed and clicked the verify button would receive notification that a new device attempted to log in to their Telegram account.

Following then, the bogus infographic would be shared with other Telegram users on the victims' contact list.

They would also be added to anonymous Telegram group conversations ostensibly discussing financial opportunities.

The police emphasized that MOF will only release information through approved MOF channels.

Any SMS notifications issued by the MOF will exclusively advise citizens about their benefits.

Recipients will not be prompted to respond to the SMS, click on any links, or input any personal information.
